Unionaire plans to develop a factory geared for exports out of Egypt

WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TODAY

TODAY: It’s a busy morning in the logistics world

Good morning, friends. It’s a very busy morning with a heavy flow of updates coming in from across the region, cutting across nearly every subsector of the industry. We have a bit of everything, from aviation to ports to zones and everything in between. Let’s dive right in.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

#1- Saudi Arabia “took a pause” on joining BRICS as a full member and did not complete the procedures to join the economic group, Russian presidential aide Yuri Oshakov was quoted as telling reporters by TASS and RIA. Saudi “representatives attended many events that we held within the framework of the association. But they refrained from developing documents and jointly making decisions,” Oshakov said. The Kingdom was invited to join the alliance over a year ago. Asharq Business also has the story.

To Trump’s liking: US president-elect Donald Trump is setting his sights on BRICS nations’ efforts to challenge the dominance of the greenback, threatening 100% tariffs unless they abandon plans to challenge the USD’s status as the global reserve currency. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the USD while we stand by and watch is OVER.”

ON THE AVIATION FRONT- KSA shortlists bidders for New Abha Airport project: The Saudi Civil Aviation Holding Company (Matarat) has prequalified four bidders for the privatization, expansion, and upgrade of the New Abha International Airport project, according to TradeArabia. The project will be executed in two to three phases, with completion expected by 2028.

Who’s in the running? Pre-qualified candidates for the project are:

BACKGROUND- Matarat and the National Centre for Privatization & PPP (NCP) invited expressions of interest earlier this year, to tackle overcapacity issues at Abha’s airport where it currently handles 4.4 mn passengers, far exceeding its original capacity of 1.5 mn. The 30-year project, following a build-transfer-operate (BTO) model, was unveiled in October 2023 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

ICYMI- Abha is not the only one up for a tender: In April 2023, NCP had listed the airport among four new airport projects it intended to tender under the PPP model as part of a bigger pipeline of 200 privatization and PPP projects.

#2- Egypt’s Industry Ministry is currently studying plans to establish a ready-built industrial complex of 450 factories in South Port Said Industrial Zone’s extension, according to a statement. The project is aimed at supporting small-scale industries, including textiles, ready-made garments, engineering, food, and chemical industries, and will offer units with areas ranging from 250-500 square meters.

REMEMBER- AD Ports inked an MoU with Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) to establish an industrial zone in East Port Said back in November.

IN OTHER EGYPT UPDATES- Plans are in motion to establish a new passenger terminal with an initial capacity of 30 mn passengers annually at Cairo International Airport, with the option to add an additional 10 mn, according to a statement. Terminal 4 — dubbed The New Republic Air Gateway — will be completed within four to five years, but the ministry is still in discussions with companies specialized in international airport construction and management.

#3- Iraq’s Umm Qasr North Port is exploring a new electronic system for truck management, according to a statement. The new system will streamline the entry of trucks into the port of cargo loading through electronically entered and stored data with minimum disruptions compared to the previous system.

MARKET WATCH-

#1- Oil prices rose in early morning trading buoyed by positive forecasts for US economic data ahead of the holidays, Reuters reports. Brent crude futures climbed USD 0.33 to USD 72.96 a barrel by GMT 04.22, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose USD 0.29 to USD 69.53 a barrel.

#2- Baltic index stays steady since Friday: The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index — which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments — rose four points to 994 points on Monday. The capesize index rose 17 points to 1,132 points, while the panamax index tacked on four points to 980 points. The smaller supramax index shed 8 points to 932 points, its lowest level since August 2023.

DP World’s Drydocks World inaugurates its new South Yard expansion

Drydocks World expands South Yard facility: DP World marine and ship repair services subsidiary Drydocks World inaugurated a multi-mn USD expansion facility which will boost the company’s fabrication capacity by 40% and yard capacity by 25%, according to a statement. The project – first announced in 2021 – can host up to 3k workers a day once operational. The exact investment figure for the expansion project was not disclosed.

What we know: The expansion inaugurates a 75k sqm modern facility to boost fabrication capacities to support Drydock’s role in global marine and offshore wind energy projects. The South Yard now hosts the largest load-out jetty in the region, with a handling capacity of up to 37k tonnes. A 5k tonne sheerleg floating crane is also being integrated into the yard to further boost capacity, which is forecasted to be operational by 2026.

Why is this important? The yard will deliver a variety of complex industrial projects, including constructing topsides for offshore platforms, converting floating production storage and offloading vessels, and developing high-voltage alternative current and high-voltage direct current converter platforms for the offshore wind energy industry. Drydocks World has integrated new tech to advance fabrication efficiency and accuracy, including robotic profile-cutting machines, automated computer numerical control systems and a heavy-duty rolling machine.

Going green: Clean energy sourced from Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will wholly fuel operations at the South Yard.

Bahri + Salic JV kick off operations at Yanbu Grain Handling Terminal

Bahri + Salic JV cuts ribbon on Yanbu Grain Terminal: The National Grains Company, a JV between Bahri and the Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Co. (Salic), kicked off operations at its Yanbu Grain Handling Terminal, according to a disclosure to Tadawul. Originally set to go online in 2H 2023, the project was delayed due to the fulfillment of additional requirements and the expansion of its infrastructure, which raised the projected cost by 7% to SAR 441.4 mn.

The details: The terminal has a capacity of handling up to 3 mn tons of grain per year with a total storage capacity of up to 156k tons. The infrastructure features 12 silos with a total capacity of 96k tons. It also includes a 650-meter conveyor belt and is capable of unloading up to 800 tons per hour directly from ships.

Iran greenlights general provisions of Eurasia FTA bill

Iran’s parliament has approved the general provisions for the freetrade agreement (FTA) between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Mehr News reports. The parliament assessed its Economic Commission’s report on the bill for the FTA and ratified the bill in principle.

Why this is important: Iran signed the FTA with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) last year to see the removal of all tariffs on up to 87% of goods traded between Iran and EAEU member states. The agreement looks to boost trade between Iran and the EAEU by between USD 18 bn to USD 20 bn over the next five years.

Big potential for trade: The volume of trade between Iran and the EAEU — which comprises Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia — grew 11% in 9M 2024. Iran reported a 16% increase in exports to the EAEU nations in the first five months of the Iranian calendar (20 March to 20 August) and the export volume totalled 2.2 mn metric tons, up 35% y-o-y, Tehran Times reports.

It’s been in the works: Iran and the EAEU inked a preferential trade agreement (PTA) back in 2018, leading the pair to kick off negotiations to upgrade the agreement to an FTA. The agreement follows three and a half years of talks which saw some 30 sessions of negotiations.

Tarshid to retrofit KSA’s railway facilities: Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) tapped the National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) to roll out energy efficiency upgrades at SAR’s headquarters and Riyadh North Station facilities, SPA reports. The retrofit project aims to slash energy consumption, saving some 7 GWh annually and a total of 105 GWh over its lifecycle.

The upgrades include rooftop solar panels, high-performance LED lighting with motion detectors, and advanced control systems for air conditioning and ventilation. These measures will improve cooling and lighting performance while reducing environmental impact, with projected savings of 168k barrels of oil and CO2 emission reductions of 60k metric tons.

ALSO- Tarshid has partnered with SAL Logistics Services to boost energy efficiency across SAL facilities in the Kingdom, SPA reports. The pair inked a strategic agreement to develop a detailed study evaluating ways to best implement optimal energy efficiency solutions.

About Tarshid: The firm – fully owned by the Public Investment Fund and the Kingdom’s first super energy service company (ESCO) — is active in solar installations, and retrofits of street lights, buildings, and facilities. The company has 427 projects, 24k retrofitted buildings, 4.2 mn LED streetlights, and 4.1 mn metric tons annually of avoided carbon emissions.

Shanghai Port nabs new world record

Shanghai Port sets a new record: China’s Shanghai Port became the first port in the world to achieve an annual container throughput exceeding 50 mn TEU, according to a statement. Export-heavy containers, international transfer containers, and ship-to-ship transfers — which are projected to reach a record 60% in 2024 — are main factors in the record. The port has been ranking first in container throughput for the past 14 consecutive years, and is expected to secure the same position for the 15th year.

IN OTHER CHINA NEWS- Russia is experiencing difficulty in shipping goods through its eastern rail network to China as sanctions and war efforts weigh down the economy, Bloomberg reports. China’s imports from Russia fell 9.2% y-o-y in September and 4.3% y-o-y in October, driven down by trade disruptions due to payment issues. The nation’s state-owned carrier Russian Railways JSC cut down its investment program for 2025 by 30%, while cargo is building up in existing trade bottlenecks around the country.

Looking forward: The railway is “experiencing its deepest slump since the 2008-09 crisis this year, and the trend is still going strong,” Moscow-based MMI Research told the news outlet. “We assume that this is due to both the needs of the army — loading the network with priority cargo — and the worsening problems with the rolling stock,” MMI Research added.
